1) You are the attorneys for Dred Scott. Write
a Brief in which you present your side of the question to the Supreme Court.
Remember to cite the appropriate references in the United States Constitution
upon which you will base your arguments, as well as any other documents that
might reenforce your claims. You might find it helpful to refer to the
Constitution as presented in your textbook.
2) You are now the attorneys for the
appellee—John Sanford. Write a Brief in which you present your side of the
question to the Supreme Court. Remember to cite the appropriate references in
the United States Constitution upon which you will base your arguments, as well
as any other documents that might reenforce your claims. You might find it
helpful to refer to the Constitution as presented in your textbook.
3) You will reenact the final decision as
expressed by Chief Justice Taney. This will be videotaped.
4) In a well-developed essay using your
knowledge of the topic and the information gathered from the previous tasks,
explain what Justice Taney meant by the following:
“Dred
Scott was not a citizen of Missouri within the meaning of the Constitution of
the United States and not entitled as such to sue in its courts.”
